This image provides an opportunity for teachers to share with students the impact and influence of an American physician and NASA astronaut.

Dr. Jemison became the first African American woman to travel in space when she went into orbit aboard the Space Shuttle Endeavour on September 12, 1992.

She enrolled at Stanford University at the age of 16 and received a B.S. in Chemical Engineering. Four years later she obtained her MD from Cornell University.

She was working as a General Practitioner in California when she was selected to the astronaut program in 1987. Dr. Jemison was the science mission specialist on The Endeavour (September 12-20, 1992).
